May 2000 For the last six years or so, Germany’s popular West Cigarettes have been sold in several attractive ‘limited edition’ sets. Pictured below are my favorites, the five predatory animal packs from May 2000. One thing that is especially interesting about the West Wild Lights Edition is that the animal graphics are printed upside down. No, I don’t know why, but I doubt that it was an inadvertent mistake. Perhaps it’s just something as simple as open mouths that can open even wider when the top is flipped. Whichever way the pack is turned, those malevolent mouths seem to be ready to enjoy a smoker for dinner. Can the hidden meaning have anything to do with the fact that some law firms are ready to devour cigarette manufacturers? It’s a jungle out there! All fun aside, though, I think it curiously symbolic that the manufacturer would conjure up such a bloodthirsty possibility together with the health warning about the dangers of smoking. |
